Works should be either minimalist in nature, diminutive in size, or play on the theme of microcosm: extremes or contrast in size. (Some fun examples below.) Both finished works and the creation of new works on this theme are encouraged. "Mechanized Microcosm"

How to Photograph Your Art
|
Below are just a few tips from fine art photography experts Trevor Kobrin and Jeremy Mckane, who made an excellent team in demonstrating how to photograph art! So much more was discussed that can't be covered here, so please make an effort to attend our next workshop on photographing your art, in early 2013!
1) Photographing PaintingsTrevor gave a hands-on demo on how to shoot 2D wall-hung art work for the painters. Trevor says never use the built-in flash on your camera or any light source pointed directly at your flat art work. Set your camera at a right angle to the art, preferably on a tripod. Make sure the lens is pointed at the center of the painting, and that the back of the camera is horizontal and vertical to the art work. A minimum of two lights should be used, placed on either side of the camera at a 45 degree angle pointing towards opposite sides of the painting, and at equal distance from the art work. This indirect lighting will give even illumination across the painting surface when using artificial light.
2) Picture FramesAre you showing your frame or your painting? Crop out the frame, as it can distract from the actual art. Glass on paintings can get tricky, so ideally try to shoot paintings without glass over them.
3) Types of LightingArtificial light sources can be used (tungsten or household bulbs, florescent, and halogen) but each has its own color temperature and the correct white balance must be set on your camera to avoid color variations such as the yellow from tungsten lighting. The simplest way to correct color variations is to photograph a grey card against the art, and use computer software to achieve the white balance.
4) Photographing Indoor Sculpture Jeremy demonstrated the fine points of shooting 3D art work for our sculptors. Light the background first. If the surface reflects, like shiny metal, polished marble or glass, be sure not to light the actual art. Instead direct the light onto white material so light ricochets onto the art. Be sure to always light any fused or blown glass art from behind, not the front of the glass which will only produce glare. 5) Correcting and Refining your Photos One advantage of indoor photography is the ability to use more bells and whistles like the set-up Jeremy used here while shooting the work, with affordable software designed specifically for this, like Adobe Photoshop (Ps Elements, the cheaper form) or Lightroom. This can save you many, many hours. Use the RAW file format if your camera allows it, and edit RAW images in either of these software rather than using jpegs, as RAW files allow for more flexibility, are better quality, and with these software adjustment filters, will provide non-destructive editing results.
6) Photographing Outdoor Art When photographing your outdoor art, Jeremy says there is a time around dusk (the golden hour) when the light can be absolutely perfect, so be sure to set up your tripod and camera early enough to capture that window of time. You might stake out your art work at different times of the day before photographing it, to see how the sunlight changes your art. At our next workshop, Jeremy and Trevor will discuss more on the different software that can be used to perfect your photos, photography tools, decent cameras that are affordable, and more tips on lighting to get fabulous photos. Don't miss our next amazing "Photographing Your Art" workshop!
