 Artists & Health
Heavy Metals
So you know that you should never polish, grind, or work with noxious fumes or dust without adequate protection in the studio, like 3M face masks, good ventilation and dust collectors like this one.

Here's Why...
While not a widely discussed issue, sculptors and even painters can ingest and absorb heavy metals from years of prolonged exposure to metal dust, fumes, glazes and chemicals like cadmium, mercury, aluminum and lead. These can build up in our bodies and cause many health problems.

Eat more cilantro...

"We can chelate toxic metals from our bodies in a relatively short period of time." says Dr. Thomas Stearns Lee NMD, in reference to cilantro (also called coriander leaf or Chinese parsley).

Surprisingly, this delicious cilantro detox pesto created by Dr. Lee is said to be a powerful tissue cleanser to help increase urinary excretion of mercury, lead, and aluminum (and is a great source of selenium, cysteine, zinc, magnesium, Vit. A, C, and Omega 3.)

Sculptor's Pesto
  1/3 cup Brazil nuts
  1/3 cup sunflower seeds
  1/3 cup pumpkin seeds
  2 cups packed fresh cilantro
  4 cloves garlic
2/3 cup flaxseed oil (or olive oil)
  4 T. lemon juice
  2 tsp. Dulse powder (and/or 1/4 t. sea salt)

Blender-process the cilantro and rest of ingredients into a paste. Store in refrigerator, freezes well. Delicious on toast, pasta, salads and baked potatoes. Make your own version, just be sure to use lots of cilantro.

(If however, you are one of those people that refuse to eat cilantro, you may find this club interesting.)

This is not meant to be a replacement for your doctor's advice. Obviously, you should avoid any of these ingredients if allergic to them. Consult your practitioner for testing and further treatment if you think you may have heavy metal toxicity.
Don't  Do  This
How To NOT Sell Your Art...
inspired by Lisa Taylor and Alan Bamberger

1) Be a legend in your own mind and express this to those not interested in your art. Act really important, no matter how many shows you've had. Act shocked when people don't recognize you as a household name. When they do ask about your art, ask if they have been living under a rock?

2) Don't make your contact info accessible to potential buyers, it makes you more mysterious and will also ensure that you follow in many famous artist's shoes! (Becoming legendary after you are dead.) When potential buyers do get hold of you to ask about your art, don't return their call until days or weeks later, or not at all. You are way too busy being mysterious.

3) To anyone in close vicinity, loudly blame your lack of artistic success on your college, parents, third grade teacher, or the mailman. Whine that nobody understands your art. When people's eyes roll back in their sockets, keep talking.

4) Put down other artists and explain to everyone why your work is so much better. Be highly competitive with other artists and fearful that they will steal your buyers. Don't consider how unique your ability and your work is, or hone in on your own specific market.

5) Overindulge in drugs and alcohol at your private showings. Wearing lampshades is more fun than selling art work. Or do the opposite and be a wall flower. Stare at your shoes when people approach your work, or if you have to answer questions then stuff your mouth full of canapes so whatever you say is muffled.

6) Show up late or not at all for appointments or at your own showings. Tell people it is your prerogative as a creative person, that you live in your own world and everyone there likes you just fine.

7) Allow your prices to go up and down with your emotions, depending on what kind of day you are having. Keep those buyers guessing, don't make it too easy for them to buy your work. If people don't prefer your style of work, take it very personally. Confuse your identity with your art, instead of realizing the difference between who you are, and what you do.

Or do just the opposite to increase chances of selling your art!

The Silver Swan

The Silver Swan is an automaton sculpture made over 240 years ago by Parisian jeweler M. Briquet, with its internal mechanism designed by John Joseph Merlin, a famous inventor of the time. It is now displayed at the Bowes Museum. Mark Twain saw the Silver Swan at the Paris exhibition in 1867 and described it in his book, The Innocents Abroad:

'I watched the Silver Swan, which had a living grace about his movement and a living intelligence in his eyes -- watched him swimming about as comfortably and unconcernedly as it he had been born in a morass instead of a jeweler's shop -- watched him seize a silver fish from under the water and hold up his head and go through the customary and elaborate motions of swallowing it...'
